Review | Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker

The Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker is a budget Bluetooth speaker priced at around $29.96 (Rs. 1499). This speaker is an awesome investment which not only fits in your budget but also adds into your collection of cool things to own.

Overall, it is a good speaker given its price range, but it does leave a few things to be desired. We shall cover all the qualities, the good, the bad, and the ugly in this review article below which encompasses most of what we found in these speakers.

First Impressions: Too much white?

The speaker is contained in a thin paper box featuring the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker on the cover. The speaker itself is placed inside, sandwiched between two layers of protective padding. Upon taking it out, the speaker seems to be on the larger side with a rather heavy weight to it: quite unlike what you would expect from portable Bluetooth speakers. A charging cable is provided along with the speaker along with an AUX jack.

The speaker is completely white with a white metallic mesh on top, and a white base which features its control buttons including Lock/Unlock light, Back, Play/Pause, Fast-Forward, and Play Mode. The same base also features the charging port, the AUX in/Headphone out port, and the Micro SD card slot, an LED status indicator, and the Soundlogic logo in gray, thankfully. Underneath the speakers, you'll find four gray coloured rubber paddings which are probably the only things which aren't white in this speaker, a ring useful for carrying the speaker around, and the On/Off switch. Even the charging cable and the AUX jack provided along with the speaker are white. Honestly, we're yet to figure out whether using white was a more economic strategy, or whether it makes some sort of a puritan aesthetical sense to the designers.

Functionality

Despite its white syndrome and overbearing size for a portable speaker, it does seem to be quite functional when it comes to getting the job done.

Portability

Now when it comes to the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker, it is more towards the bulkier side for a portable Bluetooth speaker. The frame is quite big, measures at 9cm x 12.5cm x 9cm. Even the weight is comparatively heavier as compared to other portable Bluetooth speakers out there on the market. The walls of the speaker are also smooth which gets rid of the desired traction which aids in holding the speaker. All these factors contribute to a really poor portability of the device. The Bluetooth device does, however, hold strongly to distances up to 30 feet.

However, these speakers do have a semicircular ring on the base which does assist in carrying the speaker around. This large ring can simply be worn on your fingers, or tied to any other article such as a backpack or a piece of rope. Even though the ring does greatly assist in the portability of this speaker, the speaker still does remain largely non-portable given its sheer size. It takes up quite a significant amount of space in case you wish to pack it in your bag and carry it somewhere.

Durability

Although we haven't actually drop tested the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker, these seem to be rather durable. Now that doesn't mean that you can go ahead and bash it against a rock just for the heck of it. Don't do that. However, these speakers will handle a little bit of rough usage and would survive most falls resulting from carelessness and come out just a little scratched at the most. These speakers can also handle a little bit of splashing and seem to function in some light rain as well, although we never purposely kept them in the rain just for the heck of it. Do that at your own risk in case you want to. None of these factors seems to affect the light in any manner.

Battery Life and Charging Time

This speaker takes around 4 to 5 hours to charge completely. The LED status indicator turns red while charging and turns off once the speaker is completely charged. The LED status indicator keeps blinking blue when on, regardless of whether the lights are on or off, whether a song is playing, or whether it is on standby. On standby, the speaker can remain on for about 10 to 12 hours before the battery dies. With the lights off, this speaker can provide a playback time of about 6 to 7 hours, while it can play songs for about 5 to 6 hours with the lights on.

One of the issues we faced while charging is that the speaker cannot be simultaneously charged and used when completely discharged. The speaker must be allowed some time, nearly twenty minutes, to reach a sufficient amount of charge before it can be used and charged at the same time. Otherwise, it simply shuts off after about a minute of turning it on.

Controls

The Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker comes with five buttons which are used to change different features of the speaker or control the songs being played. This review section doesn't concern itself with the On/Off switch, but the five buttons present on the base.

The first button is the light lock/unlock switch. The light itself is controlled by simply touching the metallic mesh present on top of the speaker. We'll get into details of controlling the light in a later section. This button makes sure that the touchpad present on top of the speaker goes inactive. As a result, the lighting can no longer be accidentally changed unless the button is pressed again to unlock the lighting controls.

The second button is the Back button. Pressed once, this button goes one song backwards. Meaning, it plays the song played before the current song. Long pressing this button decreases the volume of the speaker.

The third button is the Play/Pause button. Press it once to pause a song. Press it again to play the song again. A long press stops the entire playlist and starts again from the top.

The fourth button is the Forward button. A single press skips or fast-forwards to the next song in the queue. Long pressing the forward button increases the volume of the speaker.

The fifth and final button is Mode switch button. This button is used to cycle through all the modes present in the speaker. Upon pressing this button, you can hear a chime indicating that the mode has been changed. By default, the speaker is always set to Bluetooth mode. The speaker chimes once more when a Bluetooth device is connected. Upon pressing the Mode switch button once, the speaker enters the AUX mode. The speaker doesn't change the input mode to AUX by default. You must manually enter the AUX mode everytime you start it. Again, the speaker chimes once it detects a jack in its AUX-in port. Finally, upon the second press, the speaker moves to Memory Card mode. The speaker chimes in case a memory card is detected and proceeds to start playing all songs present inside the card. The songs have an order of their own when played from the Memory card which we are yet to figure out. In order to play from the memory card, simply load all songs into it. The speaker, however, does not support FLAC, M4A, and OGG formats unless they are being played from some external source.

The song controls work on all platforms. Now, let's head on to some minor problems which you might face.

Minor problems

We realised that these are indeed budget speakers, and we were ready for some minor problems such as glitches and manufacturing defects. And we did find some of them. Here is a list of defects which you might find in your model:

  • Getting the memory card out of the memory card slot is a real struggle.
  • The buttons tend to get stuck in pressed down mode and must be pressed again to release them.
  • The AUX-in cord given along with the speaker is really fragile and gets messed up pretty quick. We had to replace ours with another cord from Amazon.
Apart from these problems which one can work around, we didn't really find many other problems. We would've certainly counted them towards drawbacks, but honestly, how much can you expect from speakers worth $29.96 (Rs.1499)?

Lights

The Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker is all about a dynamic display of lighting. The lighting feature causes the entire body of the speaker to light up in different shades depending upon the mode of lighting. Let's explore all the facets of lighting offered by the speaker:

The lighting is controlled by the touch panel placed underneath the metallic mesh on top of the speaker. Touching the metallic mesh changes the lighting conditions. The speaker itself has two lighting conditions: ambient, and multicoloured.

Ambient lighting mode

The natural lighting mode is what the speaker is set to by default. This mode cycles between different intensities of a pleasurable ambient hue of neutral light. The light itself has a yellowish tinge to it. Tapping the mesh once changes the intensity of the light from dimmer to brighter. The light is always pleasant and never hurts the eyes no matter how dark the ambience. In fact, it makes for a great showpiece. The mode starts off with the lights turned off, or 0 intensity, and steps up the intensity thrice until it cycles back to lights off mode. This mode of lighting is perfect for a relaxing atmosphere combined with some relaxing ambient music added as a touch. Additionally, this mode is the only mode where the lighting can be turned off.

 Multicolour mode

If the natural lighting mode is relaxing and pleasurable to look at, the multicolour mode is another story altogether. This mode features really bright and extravagant colours and cycles through various shades for various exciting moods. This mode can be accessed by long tapping the mesh on top of the speaker. The mode starts off with a bright and passionate shade of red, then cycles to a deep and sombre shade of blue. It then changes to a bright and comforting colour of green. The next transition is into a lovely hue of pink. It finally moves on to a bright colour of cyan. After that, pressing the button switches it to a dynamic colour changing mode wherein all the colours keep fading in and out creating a beautiful gradient of colours to be displayed. While this doesn't really help with sustaining a mood, it still does look good nonetheless.

The final mode is the pulsating colour changing mode. This is perhaps the best mode to switch in case you're looking for something dynamic and energetic. In this mode, the speaker keeps changing colours while dancing to the music. The colours keep changing and cycling while the intensity of the light changes according to the loudness of the music and the beat and saturation of music. This mode looks best with energetic genres of music such as EDM, Rock, or Jazz. This is also the only mode which dynamically responds or pulsates to the music being played. Other modes provide a constant source of light. Touch again to switch back to Red, or long touch to switch back to Ambient mode.

Lighting is perhaps the best feature that the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker has. Not only are the lights really appealing and exciting, but they also dance to the beat of the song creating a very lively ambience in the bigger picture.

Lights: 4.5/5

Sound

Now that everything else is out of the way, it is finally time to test the main purpose of a speaker: producing sound. This speaker honestly didn't have much of a difference before and after the burn-in. The only noticeable difference was that the Bass seemed to be a little deeper than before.

Highs

The Highs are probably the best sounds that emerge from the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker. The treble is crystal clear and completely clean, which is rather surprising for a speaker in this price range. Cymbals, Violins and other shrill notes sound heavenly and easily distinguishable with even the slightest of difference. The highs are also the loudest feature of this speaker. It seems as though this speaker was designed specifically with the highs in mind.

Highs: 4.5/5

Mids

While the highs may sound gorgeous to the ear, the mids are a different tale altogether. Not only are they suppressed, but differentiating between the different notes is a disaster. Sure, you can make out distinct sounds provided there is a distinct beat present in the music, the mids tend to get rather saturated. Simply put, the mids in this speaker are bad. That's all there is to say for the Mids.

Mids: 2/5

Lows

The bass is comparatively better than the mids. You can distinguish between different notes produced by the speaker. The bass is also comparatively louder. The bass isn't an overpowering, or punchy sort, but something more of an everpresent undernote to the music. There is a lack of punchiness to it. The lows aren't well sustained either. Sometimes, they fall short of the intended effect while they work just fine at other times. The lows won't drown out the rest of the music, but they will be there to support it.  A pronounced boom to the bass is certainly found missing in quite a few places. They're nothing remarkable, but still, a job well done considering the price range and the diversity that the speaker does offer. You can't really expect much else from a speaker in this price range.

Lows: 3/5

Overall sound quality

Overall, the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker has a strong treble, with an okay bass line and cringy mids. Not that it ruins the overall quality of the music, but it sure doesn't give you an enhanced sense of pleasure that you might find elsewhere. As for the playback quality, this speaker features a Mono channel so any sounds produced from this speaker are converted from stereo channels to a mono sound channel. Some music data is lost in the process, and it does affect the overall clarity of the music. The loss of clarity isn't so bad, however, that you'd want to smash this speaker into oblivion. The final drawback observed in this speaker is that it is unable to produce louder sounds. The volume is sufficient for personal listening but isn't exactly suited to a group of ten people, or blowing music in your car with your windows down. All in all, this speaker is pretty much average for a portable Bluetooth speaker, but quite good when the price range and the lighting effect is taken into consideration.

Conclusion

In the end, the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker seems to be sort of a fair deal with a low price to be paid for all its ambient lighting features even though it is a little difficult to carry around, and the music does leave a few things to be desired. It may have a few shortcomings, but what could you honestly expect from something in this price range? Despite its white syndrome, this speaker is certainly a cool thing to own, and it certainly does get the job done when called for. It could be better, but it's actually quite good for its budget. The speaker is probably best suited to being used an ambient lamp which produces sound. The lighting features along with some ambient music on low volumes would make for a great mood when you're willing to indulge yourself or others in some pleasurable conversation or light-hearted relaxation. As far as listening actively to music goes, while this may get the job done and would work perfectly for a group of up to four people, there are other better devices out there although none are as reasonable of a deal as this one. All in all, with the budget the Soundlogic Btc001s Touchlight Color changing Bluetooth Speaker falls under ($29.96 or Rs.1499), it is a perfectly good device to own and use if you're looking for something more affordable.
